Spring Break Travel Becoming More Costly in 2025, AAA Data Shows

AAA booking data reveals the most popular destinations across the U.S. and abroad for spring.

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. (February 19, 2025) - From airfare to hotels, travel costs are on the rise, making smart spring break planning essential in 2025. Leveraging the knowledge and guidance of AAA travel experts can help make vacation planning affordable and budget-friendly.

According to AAA booking data, spring break travel costs are increasing.

  • The average domestic roundtrip airfare ticket is up $820, a 7% increase from last year, and $1,440 for international cities, up 2% from last year.
  • U.S. Hotel stays are 8% more expensive, averaging $660. International hotel stays are 4% cheaper, averaging $740.
  • Domestic cruises are 27% more expensive this year, while international cruises are 3% more expensive.

“While data shows the costs of airfare and hotels are rising during spring break timeframes, there are ways to save,” said Cyndi Zesk, Senior Vice President of Travel for AAA Northern California. “AAA members can access many member benefits from hotel discounts to onboard cruise credits and rental car upgrades. Travel Advisers can ensure you’re getting the best value and best experience during your vacation.”

Vacationers are prioritizing sunshine this year with four Florida cities - Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and Tampa -  among the top 10 most booked destinations. Los Angeles/Anaheim ranks among the most popular cities, and AAA Travel Advisors say warmer cities with numerous attractions like Phoenix and Las Vegas are perennial favorites.

International flights to Europe remain popular, particularly to cities like Rome, London, Dublin, and Paris. Record demand for cruise ships continues into 2025 with 19 million people expected to set sail this year.

AAA Northern California offers these tips for spring break travelers:

  • Understand new travel requirements. European countries are expected to enforce new travel laws called ETA and ETIAS in 2025. Travelers may need to fill out an application form before entering their destination.
  • Be ready for REAL ID. Travelers should be aware of the May 7, 2025 REAL ID enforcement date. Adults traveling within the U.S. must have a REAL ID or other acceptable form of ID to board domestic flights and access certain federal facilities.
  • Stay connected for a stress-free spring. Use the AAA Mobile App’s Apple Carplay features to find the lowest gas prices along your route. The app can also be used to request roadside assistance and access EV features.
  • Research ahead of time. Whether it’s mapping out your route or planning which attractions you want to visit when you arrive, AAA offers TripTik and Trip Canvas, two free travel tools to keep you organized and prepared.
  • Speak with a AAA Travel Advisor. AAA Travel Advisors can look for money-saving deals and create customized travel packages. AAA branches also offer services like passport photos and international driving permits. Members can also access exclusive travel discounts on hotels, cruises, vacation packages, and more.
