On the season finale of the Via Podcast, hosts Michelle Donati and Mitti Hicks head into the high deserts of California and Nevada to visit ghost towns. They learn what it's like to actually live in one—where there may or may not be a resident spirit—and where to go to see the most preserved mining towns in the West.

Guest Brent Underwood, owner and resident of Cerro Gordo near Death Valley, California, shares what it's like to make a home in a former mining town, and why it's important to visit and maintain these snapshots of Western life.

Brent Underwood is the owner of Cerro Gordo, an original Western boomtown, established in 1865. The town was once the largest silver mine in California, with over $500 million worth of minerals pulled out of the 30 miles of mines. But all that ended a century ago. In March of 2020, Underwood moved to the former mining town, in hopes to bring it back to life. He documents the experience on his YouTube channel “Ghost Town Living” and elsewhere, where combined over 5 million people follow along. His book, Ghost Town Living, was a New York Times bestseller. Brent resides full time on his mountain above Death Valley, where he lives with no running water, seven cats, six goats, and at least one ghost.
