Bring the following with you to the AAA office:

• Valid AAA Membership Card
• Valid driver’s license, government-issued ID, or DMV ID card
• California DMV paperwork. For vehicle-specific transactions, your name must be on the vehicle title or registration paperwork.
• Your payment for DMV services. Credit cards, debit cards, and cash are accepted for most transactions.

Effective March 1, 2021, a fee of up to 1.72% will be charged by AAA NCNU when you pay for a CA DMV transaction by credit card. This fee is charged to help cover our costs for processing credit card payments that are made for CA DMV transactions. The fee does not apply when paying by cash or debit card. We do not accept payment by check.

Registration renewal

• Proof of ownership
• Vehicle license plate or VIN number

Reinstate registrations suspended due to lapse in insurance

• Suspended Registration Reinstatement Application
• Insurance documents and proof of paid reinstatement fee¹

Transfer of ownership

• A completed California Certificate of Title or Application for replacement or transfer of title (REG 227)²
• The signature(s) of seller(s) and lienholder (if any).
• The signature(s) of buyer(s).
• Smog checks are required for gasoline powered vehicles that are of the 1976 model year or newer and for diesel powered vehicles that are of the 1997 model year or newer unless it is a family transfer.

Replacement license plates/registration card/stickers

• A completed Application for replacement plates, stickers, documents (REG 156)
• You may need to: surrender remaining license plates

Duplicate title

• A completed Application for Duplicate or Paperless Title (REG227)
• The vehicle’s license plate or VIN/HIN number.

Apply for and pick up disabled license plates and placards

A completed Application for Disabled Person Placard or Plates (REG 195)³

Out-of-state transfers to California for most automobiles and light commercial vehicles

A completed Application for Title or Registration/Verification of Vehicle (REG 343). Vehicle must be present to complete a vin verification

• The last issued out of state title or registration certificate
• VIN Verification certificate completed by a law enforcement officer, or CA licensed vehicle verifier.⁴

Ordering Special interest plates

• A completed Special Interest License Plate Application (REG 17)

Moving permits

• Proof of ownership
• Proof of fees paid or PNO on file
• The date you choose must be within 60 days from the issue date

Temporary operating permits

AAA is authorized to issue the following types of TOPs: Biennial Smog Certificate TOP, One-time 30,60, or 90 day TOP, One-day vehicle moving permit. We cannot issue a One-Trip Permit

• May be issued in certain circumstances when all registration fees have been paid, but license plates and/or registration stickers haven’t been issued.
