Pie is a perennial favorite. Thankfully, the West is filled with places to score this delicious baked dish, in both savory and sweet forms—because sometimes you’re craving a pastry bursting with sweet summer fruit, and other times you want a buttery, cheesy treat stuffed with flavorful roasted tomatoes. From California’s capital to the outskirts of Montana’s Glacier National Park, here are some of the best spots throughout the West to pull up for a slice.

Butter Love Bakeshop, San Francisco

Tucked away in San Francisco’s foggy Outer Richmond neighborhood, Butter Love is a tiny artisan bakery specializing in “all things butter,” including pies that are both sweet and savory. Choose from seasonal fruit pies brimming with pears or stonefruit, tropical fruit creations, homemade butterscotch pudding pies, and pies perfect for dinner, such as chicken pot pie and shepherd's pie filled with lamb. This small spot even offers handheld mini pies and empanadas daily. But your best bet for a take-home slice is Butter Love’s lemon meringue pie: a creamy, tart, and sweet masterpiece, not to mention a local favorite.

Frank Fat’s, Sacramento, California

For more than 85 years, Frank Fat’s has been serving plates of pork fried rice and orange chicken to the masses. But what really sets this Chinese eatery apart is its banana cream pie. As delicious as it is unexpected, this decadent treat is a slice of legendary goodness: Sweet custard is poured over a layer of sliced bananas in a flaky pie crust, then topped with fresh whipped cream. If you’re feeding a crowd, you can also order a whole pie to go.

Auntie Em’s Baked Goods, Park City, Utah

A purveyor of small-batch, made-to-order pies, Auntie Em’s opened its brick-and-mortar storefront in 2023 after gaining a loyal customer base at Park City’s Wednesday farmers’ market. Owner Emily Burney makes her sweet pies, including peach—a combo of juicy Utah peaches, vanilla, and lemon—with local produce whenever possible. She also whips up a small selection of savory pies, such as green chile pork, with a filling blend of pulled pork, house-roasted green chile tomatillo sauce, and cotija cheese. Don’t miss the Saucy Apple Crumble, a medley of crisp Granny Smith, Braeburn, and Jonathan apples, covered in a brown sugar and brown butter sauce, with a delectable crumble topping.

B.J. Bull Bakery, Elko, Nevada

This mom-and-pop eatery is known for its Cornish meat pies, or “pasties.” They’re savory handheld pies stuffed with meats and veggies (think beef and potato, cheese and produce, or chicken and rice) that are baked fresh daily in a folded and crimped shortcrust pastry. Pasties, which originated with miners in Cornwall, England, are wonderfully portable. B.J. Bull even sells them frozen to bake up later at home. Of course, you can also enjoy them in-house with a slice of fresh old-fashioned fruit pie. Go for the rhubarb, a melding of sweet and tart perfection.

Croshaw’s Gourmet Pies, St. George, Utah

With more than 30 flavors to choose from, you’ll have no trouble finding a slice that suits your appetite at this long-running, low-key eatery, where pot pies and quiches share the menu with sandwiches, salads, and plenty of sweet treats. The pie menu includes heavenly helpings of German chocolate, seasonal French peach, and a crowd favorite: sour cream lemon. There are also both sugar-free and mini pies to choose from.

Quiches and Pies, Chandler, Arizona

Opened in 2023 by restaurateurs Máiréad and Fabrice Buschtetz, Quiches and Pies brings French pastries to the forefront. Offerings include savory quiche slices, like one with goat cheese and roasted tomatoes, and elegant bourdaloue pies, which are made in a golden crust, stuffed with poached pears and almond cream, and garnished with toasted almond. This bakery and coffee shop’s rotating selection combines authentic French baking techniques (and imported French butter) with locally sourced ingredients, resulting in a unique fusion of tastes and flavors. The real star here is the quiche Lorraine, a rich and savory classic made with ham, bacon, and Swiss cheese, all baked together in a buttery pastry crust.

Tommy’s Burger Stop, Anchorage, Alaska

Already a huge draw for burger enthusiasts, this diner-style eatery is equally well-known for its “world-famous” Double Musky pie. Crusted in cracker meringue, this popular dessert combines a double-fudge brownie filling with a whipped cream topping. Tommy’s also dishes out slices of Cajun Delight, a butter pecan-crusted pie filled with cream cheese, chocolate pudding and vanilla pudding, then finished with whipped cream. It’s an ideal follow-up to one of the stop’s Cajun-influenced burgers. There are two Tommy’s locations in Anchorage, in the city’s Spenard and Dimond neighborhoods.

The Pie Hole, Evanston, Wyoming

Savor homemade pot pies stuffed with chicken, turkey, or beef, as well as two rotating sweet slices of the week at this family-owned bakery. Recent menus have touted flavors like banana cream, raspberry chocolate, blueberry, and key lime. The Pie Hole’s chalkboard menu changes daily, but it always features soups, salads, and sandwiches.

Park Cafe and Grocery, St. Mary, Montana

Synonymous with Glacier National Park’s East Glacier area, Park Cafe and Grocery has been satisfying customers with classic fruit- and pudding-filled pies for decades. Expect flaky and buttery crusts baked golden brown and crimped along the edges, and slices bursting with raspberries, cherries, and chocolate pudding. Wild huckleberries are a Montana summer staple, so be sure to save room for a slice of the cafe’s signature huckleberry pie, which is brimming with tart berries freshly picked from the nearby mountain slopes. Enjoy it al fresco on the outdoor patio, taking in panoramic views of Glacier’s mountain peaks and alpine meadows as you eat.
